Urban traffic congestion cries out for alternative solutions and the use of urban waterborne transport where possible. Transport by water could well provide an element of balance in the context of urban traffic flow in terms of quality of life and consequent integration with other transport.

In the last decade greater interest has been shown in this area, with new proposals for public (and private) transport services on water. The Centre has become a promoter of the re-launch of waterborne transport, through the organisation of events and publications that highlight the technical progress that has been made concerning noise, pollution and speed.

IWTC - International Waterborne Transport Committee
Following the international meeting "Cities on Water and Transport", promoted by the Centre (Venice, 1993), the IWTC - International Waterborne Transport Committee was set up in Brussels.

This work group within UITP - Union Internationale des Transports Publics, the international association including the main public transport companies around the world, deals specifically with the issues of urban waterborne transport, promoting its development.
The Centre has been a member of IWTC since its constitution in 1994.
