Introduction

The European Commission has been actively pursuing a policy of fostering research and development effort in the field of intermodal transport in order to support the development of a framework for the optimal integration of different modes within the door to door transport chain. The aim of such integration is to ensure a more cost-effective and efficient usage of the transport system. The SWITCH (Sustainable Workable Intermodal Transport Choices) proposal was submitted in response to the Joint Call for Transport Intermodality, published by DGVII and DGXIII on 16 December 1997.

Published by DGTREN (Transport and Energy) and DGXIII (Information and Telematics) of the European Commission for Community Activities in the Field of Research and Technological Development
